Affiliate Marketing - Initial Plan

Start building your affiliate program with the essentials: network setup, creative assets, tracking implementation, and weekly affiliate recruitment. Launch fast, scale smart.

What You’re Getting

This is the starter package for running an affiliate program. You get set up on one affiliate network, custom banners and text links created, tracking code integrated into your shopping cart, and ongoing affiliate recruitment, 15 new invites sent every week.

I handle the recruitment emails, approve or decline affiliates as they apply, and deliver weekly management reports plus a monthly performance breakdown. You’ll see everything on your BMG dashboard: who’s promoting you, what’s converting, and where sales are coming from.

What Makes This Work

Affiliate marketing is pay-for-performance. You’re only paying commissions when a sale happens. The affiliates, bloggers, coupon sites, influencers, content publishers, promote your product to their audience. When someone clicks through and buys, the affiliate gets a cut. The network tracks it all via cookies, handles payouts, and gives you reporting.

The trick is recruitment and management. Most affiliate programs sit dormant because nobody’s actively inviting high-quality affiliates or keeping them engaged. That’s what this plan handles.

How It Works

Month 1: Full setup. Dashboard account, network integration, banners and text links created, email templates written (welcome messages, approval/decline notifications), tracking code installed on your cart. I start recruiting affiliates relevant to your industry and send 15 invite emails per week.

Month 2 and ongoing: Weekly recruitment continues. I monitor your top 5 affiliates, track which banners are converting, give feedback to your best performers, and deliver weekly management reports plus a monthly sales breakdown.

You get fraud alerts if we spot sketchy activity. Google Analytics gets linked so you can cross-reference affiliate traffic with your other channels.

What You Need to Provide

  • Access to your affiliate network account (or we set up a new one)
  • Product info, logo files, brand assets for creative design
  • Shopping cart access to install tracking code (simple script on the thank-you page)
  • Commission structure and cookie duration (I’ll advise based on your margins and competition)

You validate or cancel sales at the end of each month. The network pays affiliates automatically; you only pay commissions on sales you’ve actually collected money for.

Why This Matters

Banners are the #1 tool affiliates use. If you don’t have them, most affiliates won’t promote you. Recruitment is the other bottleneck, programs don’t grow unless someone’s actively inviting new publishers. This plan covers both: the creative assets and the outreach.

Common questions.

What is affiliate marketing and how does it benefit me?

Affiliate marketing is outsourced sales. You pay a commission only when someone buys. Affiliates, bloggers, coupon sites, influencers, promote your product to their audience. When their promotion leads to a sale, they get a cut. You’re paying for results, not clicks or impressions.

It works because affiliates have existing audiences. They’re not building traffic from scratch; they’re leveraging what they already have. You tap into that.

Who are affiliates and how do they get paid?

Affiliates are publishers: bloggers, content sites, coupon platforms, loyalty programs, deal aggregators, influencer networks. They get paid per sale or per lead, depending on your commission structure. The affiliate network handles all payouts automatically at the end of each month.

What are affiliate networks and why do I need one?

Affiliate networks are the infrastructure. They host your banners and links, track clicks and sales via cookies, generate reports, and pay affiliates. Without a network, you’d be managing all of that manually, tracking who sent what traffic, calculating commissions, cutting checks. The network automates it.

Common networks: ShareASale, CJ (Commission Junction), LinkConnector, Admitad, Rakuten (Linkshare), Pepperjam.

Which networks do you work with?

ShareASale, CJ, LinkConnector, Pepperjam, Admitad, Clixgalore, Commission Factory, Rakuten. If you’re already on one of these, I integrate with your existing account. If you’re starting fresh, I’ll recommend the best fit for your industry and help you get set up.

Do I need banners?

Yes. Banners are the primary promotional tool affiliates use. If you don’t provide them, most affiliates won’t bother promoting you, they’re not going to design assets themselves. You need a variety of sizes (leaderboard, skyscraper, square, etc.) and you should update them periodically to keep them fresh.

How do I decide what commission to offer?

Look at what your competitors are offering. Factor in your profit margins, conversion rate, and product price point. If you’re a recognized brand, you can offer slightly lower commissions. If you’re new, you’ll need to be competitive or above-market to attract affiliates.

I’ll walk you through this. We’ll look at comparable programs and land on a structure that attracts affiliates without eating your margins.

How do I pay commissions?

At the end of each month, the network sends you a report of validated sales. You review it, cancel any orders that were refunded or never paid for, and approve the rest. The network then pays affiliates automatically. You’re only paying commissions on sales where you’ve actually collected revenue.

What’s the tracking code and why do I need it?

It’s a small script that goes on your checkout thank-you page. It tells the affiliate network when a sale happened, the order ID, and the sale amount. Without it, the network can’t attribute sales to affiliates. Installation is straightforward, usually just copy-paste into your cart platform.

What’s a cookie and how long should it last?

A cookie is a tracking file saved on the user’s computer when they click an affiliate link. It tracks that user for a set period (the cookie duration). If they come back and buy within that window, the affiliate gets credit.

Example: 30-day cookie. User clicks an affiliate link today, doesn’t buy, comes back in 25 days and completes an order, affiliate gets credit. If they come back in 35 days, the cookie has expired, affiliate gets nothing.

Longer cookies are more attractive to affiliates. Industry standard is 30-60 days for most e-commerce.
